Cape cod and hotel Sarah

In my last post - I showed you the beautiful wedding we attended for Jeanine and Robbie. I'm so very late in catching you up with the other wonderful things I did while on vacation at the Cape.

We stayed in a lovely little bed and breakfast in Falmouth - the Village Green Inn on Main st.

Village Green Inn

Village Green Inn

It was a perfect location because it was right on Main st - the main drag in Falmouth. On our first day - we walked around and took in the quaint town.

We got lucky and there was even a craft show going on!

Craft show

Of course we had to check it out... I got a cute necklace charm made out of a scrabble tile.

In addition to the craft show - there was also a farmer's market across the street - bonus!

Famer's market

We got some wonderful fresh apples and a bag of homemade granola - yum!

There was a yarn shop on the main street too and of course I had to go in!

Sage Yarn

It was Sage Yarn shop and they had some great stuff. I ended up coming out with ONLY 1 skein of alpaca silk laceweight in a gorgeous robin's egg blue.

The next day was the wedding and we spent most of that day on the beach. We went to Old Silver beach - my fav beach at the cape. I got the worst sunburn! I was idiot and thought that if I stayed under the umbrella - I wouldn't get burned... not so much!

Falmouth Beach

The water was very warm and I was happy to float around on the calm water.

After the wedding - we spent the next day on a lighthouse tour of the cape. I love lighthouses and we saw some really beautiful ones. My favorite is still Nobska Point Light Lighthouse - in Woods Hole (Falmouth)

Nobska Lighthouse

The view from the lighthouse is gorgeous too:

Next we drove to Chatham to see the Chatham lighthouse. After driving through the cute town and to the point where our GPS said the lighthouse was - we couldn't find it! The fog was so thick we could barely see the road! I guess that is why they need light houses on the Cape in the first place!

So after that disappointment, we drove on to Eastham MA to see the Nauset lighthouse.

Nauset lighthouse

This light house was moved from Chatham in 1923 to replace the Three Sisters lighthouses. The upper portion of the beacon was painted red in 1940, to distinguish it from Highland and Chatham lights. The retired Three sisters lighthouses were a short walk away from the Nauset lighthouse.

Three Sisters lighthouses

The origin of the Three Sister is that they build three lights to distinguish the Nauset Station, a keeper's house and three small towers of brick were constructed 150 feet apart. This site marked the only station in the U.S. designated by three towers. These are no longer in operation and were relocated to this wooded area near the current Nauset lighthouse.

Our final stop was Highland lighthouse in Truro, MA.

Cape Cod Lighthouse

Highland (or Cape Cod) Light was the first of the lighthouses of the Cape. It had to be moved back from the edge of the cliffs due to erosion. It now sits 570 feet from the cliff edge on a golf course.

This little fellow was only too happy to model for me while we were looking out over the water at Highland light.

During our drive around the cape we also found this beautiful Windmill

Windmill

The Jonathan Young Windmill was built in the 1700s. In the 1800s it was moved to Orleans and then Hyannisport. In 1983, it was returned to Orleans, where it now sits in Cove Park

After our day of driving around the cape - we headed back to North Falmouth for dinner at Sarah's parents house. It was so sweet of them to invite us over. We had burgers, dogs and sausage and plenty of fun and conversation.

Here's a great picture of Sarah and her friend Staci - I finally got her to laugh!!

John went home on Sunday and Sarah and I had three whole days to enjoy on our own back at her house in Rhode Island. We crafted, we ate fried clams, we went to the beach and we had a great time with her pets. I got a great picture of us with her dog Murphy and Jeanine's dog Shamus. Shamus is better than an alarm clock in the mornings - he just jumps on you until you get up!!

Me, Sarah, Shamus and Murphy

Sarah is the best hostess ever and if you get the chance to go to Rhode island definitely show up at her house and ask for the Hotel Sarah treatment. It includes awesome foods like this straight from her garden and local CSA - yum!!!

Thanks for an awesome time Sarah!!

More Rhode Island fun!

When I last left you - we were at Webs! After enjoying the sights at the land of yarn - we decided to dye some of our own! Stacey and Naomi joined us again and Sarah's sister Jeanine came along for the fun too!

We dyed ALOT of yarn! Sarah's backyard was the perfect location for our mini dye studio. She has buckets for soaking the fiber, every color dye you could ever want - and even set up a hot plate AND microwave!!

Just look at our setup!

Dyeing Day

Here's the loot at the end of the day - Naomi was the queen of the drying rack and set all of our yarn out just so:

Naomi - queen of the drying rack

We all dyed some great stuff - I'm very excited about the yarn I dyed for my Lady February sweater - it's the cranberry colored one hanging on the fence in the mosaic. I already swatched and got gauge and now I'm ready to cast on!! It will be my Ravelympics project :)

The next day we headed out for our second day at the beach. This time we stayed in Rhode Island and went to Salty Brine State beach. It was a gorgeous beach but very crowded with people as you can see!

Here we are enjoying the sun:

Later that night - Sarah and I went out for fried clams!!!! We went to Iggy's - which we heard was famous for their friend clams. We were definitley not dissappointed!

Iggy's

I got the "clam dinner" which came with clam strips, fries and clam showder. Yum! Unfortunately - I ate it before I remembered to take a picture. Oops!

After we ate - we walked around the beach in Oakland for a bit - it was so beautiful! It was around 7 pm so the beach was deserted - but it sure was pretty.

Since it was such a gorgeous spot - I had to take one of my favorite "at arm's length" pictures of us:

Believe it or not there is still more to come! Next time - I'll show you our tour of Newport!

Hi from vacation!!

Hi all! I'm writing from Sarah's house in Rhode Island! Believe it or not this is my 300th post! It's a big one too - so that's appropriate :)

I am going to try to catch up on all the amazing things I've been up to.

I drove up with Sarah on Thursday night. After getting stuck in some wicked traffic we finally got there around midnight. Friday we drove up to the Cape to go to the beach! I LOOOOOOOOVE Silver beach in Falmouth. It is just so awesome in every way. The water is warm and the beach has lots of shells and things to explore. Sarah and her mom and I sat on the beach, knit and swam all day - it was heaven.

Part of me wished I could be a kid again and collect crabs, minnows and other sea life from the rocks!

After the beach - we went back to Sarah's parents house and sat outside in the backyard:

and then headed for the shop.

Oh My God. There are no words to describe the massive size and selection of this place!

There is a huge shop in front:

and I got to see one of my favorite yoke sweater designs in person:

and then in the back - there is a warehouse stuffed FULL of discounted yarn!

row after row of yarn and cones! What could be better! I got a bunch of cool stuff - pictures later!

Here we are after our shopping - with bags full of goodies...

Oh and the highlight of my trip so far?!

Sarah made me a quilt!!
Sarah made me a quilt!

On the way to The Cape, she told me we were going to pick up something for her mom. So we drive like half an hour in the wrong direction and when we get there - I tell her I'll just wait in the car. Why should I go in I think? She goes to the front door and calls out for me to come in, she says the lady needs a minute to get the stuff ready. So I go in and Sarah says - surprise - this is my secret project! I made you a quilt!

I was so surprised!! I love the quilt and she had it machined quilted for me! That is why we had to go pick it up at this woman's house. I love Sarah!!

There is so much more to tell you - but this post is already way too long. So next time there will be more photos of the quilt, pics of our day of dyeing yarn and more beachy photos and who knows what else.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Cape Cod Part III

Since I'm leaving tomorrow AGAIN for another trip - I figured I'd better post the last part of my trip now.

On Sunday - Sarah took me on a tour of Falmouth and all it's beaches. I know Sarah told me the name of each and every beach we visited... but alas! I don't remember which is which. I think I was at Woodneck beach, Old Silver Beach, and Stoney Beach... your guess is as good as mine as to which is which.... Sarah? help?

Our first stop was here:

There were tons of shells on this beach and gorgeous houses lining the shore.
I think if the beach cottage doesn't work out... I'll move into one of these!

Falmouth Beach

There was a sailboat class going on too while where we there.

Our second stop was my favorite... we went swimming and laid out for a while here. The water was sooooooooo warm! I felt like I was in the tropics!

Falmouth Beach

A group of kids caught my eye ... they were all crawling around in the sand looking at something... I went over to investigate and there were little hermit crabs everywhere! It was so funny - they were catching them all and putting the little wiggling crabs into buckets by size. One little girl got her finger caught by a crab and screamed until it unlatched itself. i thought for sure that would be the end of that... but in a minute she was back to catching crabs like nothing had happened!

Falmouth beach

I also got to see the most gorgeous lighthouse...

This is Nobska lighthouse.

Isn't it amazing!!

It was such a fabulous weekend - thanks again Sarah for letting me stay with you!!!

This weekend - I'm off to a family reunion in Wisconsin! Hopefully then - I can relax and maybe not travel for a week or two? Maybe?
